Like yourself, I have also been told that I am related to John Rennie, the bridge builder. I have also been having trouble making the link. I have always been told that (Sir) John Rennie (b. 1761) is my GGGGgrandfather.

I have a book "John Rennie 1761 - 1821, The Life & Work Of A Great Engineer" by Cyril T. G. Boucher which has been a good source of information.

According to a chapter on Family*, James Rennie (d. 1766) married Jean in 1743, whose maiden name was also Rennie.

(*compiled from a manuscript in six volumes by William Rennie, commencing 1700 & carries the history of the Rennie family down to 1938 - I would love to get my hands on this!)

James Rennie & Jean Rennie had nine children (Agnes & Henrietta are missing from your list)

1) Marion (b. 1744)

2) Janet (b. 1745) married James Carnegie in 1764, descendants now living in U.S.A.

3) Jean (b. 1747)

4) George (b. 1749, d. 10 Oct 1828) married Marion Rennie (Marion was his cousin, which makes things a bit confusing)

I found the following entries for children born with parents named George & Marion Rennie.
The birth dates would indicate they are all siblings, & the 3 names you mention do occur here.

James (b. 1794)
Margaret (b. 1796)
John (b. 1797)
Jane (b. 1799)
George (b. 1802, d. 1860) Sculptor, MP, Govenor of Falklands (1848 - 1855) married Jane, 3 sons
George
William
Richard
William (b. 1803)
Margaret (b. 1805)
Janet (b. 1807)
Thomas (b. 1809)

5) Agnes (b. 1751)

6) Henrietta (b. 1753, d. 1815) Henrietta kept house for John after his wife died

7) William (b. 1756) taken prisoner during American War of Independance & died in captivity at Boston

8) James (b. 1758, d. 1799) studied medicine at Edinburgh & entered army as assistant surgeon, sent to India & served in the celebrated campaign of General Harris against Tippoo Saib & was killed while dressing the wound of his commanding-officer at the seige of Seringapatam.

9) John (b. 7 Jun 1761, d. 4 Oct 1821) married Martha Ann Mackintosh on 6 Nov 1790
John Rennie had 6 children (I think there were also 3 that died during birth or as infants)

George (b. 3 Sep 1791, d. 30 Mar 1866) managed Blackfriars factory

John (b. 30 Aug 1794, d. 3 Sep 1874) knighted by William IV

William (b. 1796, d. 2 Dec 1818) Royal Navy

Anna (b. 1798, d. 1863) married professor Charles Robert Cockerell (her cousin, & a distinguished architect) both are buried in St. Paul's Cathedral in a grave adjoining her father.

Jane (b. 1800)

James (b. 1806, d. 1883) entered the law

Not sure if I have helped any, or added to the confusion.
I figure if we keep collecting info it will all fall in to place eventually.

Good luck
