Sheila, I recently talked to a Rewis cousin who told me that the Rewis's were "Black Dutch", that there are lots of Rewis still living in the Netherlands, and that the reason they were called "Black Dutch" was because they had dark hair, dark complexion, and blue eyes and because they lived near the German border.He says that there is a museum (Rijks)in Amsterdam that has a room dedicated to Ruis (I am assuming this is a Dutch painter/sculpter)and that Ruis is the correct spelling.Also the legend is that 3 brothers (John and two others) jumped ship in the Savannah harbor off of a Dutch freigher.
