Samuel C. Rex, my fifth-great grandfather, was born in Pennsylvania. By 1827, he was in the Boone County, Kentucky and Veevay, Switzerland County, Indiana areas, when he was married to Patsey Kitts in Boone County. He already had relatives who had been in these areas since 1818. As a matter of fact, there is a town named Rexville in nearby Ripley County, Indiana. Samuel may have had the following brothers and sisters, who were in Boone County as early as him: George (born 1801 in Pennsylvania and married 1818 in Boone), Elizabeth (born 1812, and married Maxfield Winters 8-14-1825 in Boone), Peggy (born about 1800, and married Jonathan Winters 12-17-1818 in Boone), William (married about 1830 in Boone), Solomon (married 9-26-1835 in Boone), and Hannah (married Samuel Love on 10-29-1835 in Boone). Betsy (Elizabeth) Rex’s marriage record indicates consent of her father, George Rex. So, George could have been the father of all of these Rex’s in Boone.
Patsy’s parents were either Jacob and Jane Kitts or Joseph Kitts of Campbell County.Patsy Kitts died young, and Samuel Rex remarried to Mary Lawson in 1844 in Boone County.
Samuel Rex lived in Boone County in 1830, 1840, and1860, and he probably died there sometime in the late 1860s. From about 1847 to 1852, he and his family lived across the Ohio River in Posey Township, Switzerland County, Indiana.
Samuel and Mary had two children who died in Indiana at a young age. A girl died in 1853 of measles, and Theodore died in 1856 of consumption.
Samuel's son, Samuel, worked for the L&N (Louisville and Nashville) Railroad Company in 1873 in Grant County, Kentucky as section labor. He lived near Mt. Zion Station. He also worked in coal mines in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. I have a newspaper article describing a "Remarkable Incident" that occurred with Samuel's daughter. She was playing on the railroad track near her home when a fast train came along and would inevitably have killed her. However, her dog rushed in front of the oncoming engine, seized the child in his teeth, and dragged her from the track just in time to miss the wheels of the engine as the train went by. Samuel came to town and listed the dog as property, fixing his value at $500, saying he wanted to pay taxes on him as long as he lived. It may have been only instinct that led the dog to save the girl, but Samuel was so appreciative of the dog that he wanted to commemorate the deed. Samuel Jr. is buried at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church in Grant County.
Samuel Senior's son, Laban, was in the Civil War. His first two wives deserted him, and the third one died.
