RHONE, LORA CURTIS, age 89, of Morris, AL, passed away January 21, 2006, after a life of blessings. L.C. was born in Moundville, AL, on November 21, 1916, and was the son of Harvey and Mary Francis Rhone. He attended Moundville High School where he played football. He met his future bride while they were working in Tuscaloosa. Their romance was interrupted by a tour of duty during WWII. He served in Alaska and the Aleutians with the 201st Infantry. When L.C. was stateside again, he married his sweetheart, Opal Hill, at Berney Points Baptist Church in Birmingham. Living in Tuscaloosa after the war, L.C. worked for Tuscaloosa Truck & Tractor. He also owned Rhone's Autobody Shop and later went to work at B.F. Goodrich. During the time he worked there, L.C. attended the University of Alabama, after which he accepted a position as Instructor at MacArthur Technical College in Opp, AL. While working at MacArthur, he completed work for his B.S. degree attending Troy State College and Athens State College. He retired from MacArthur Junior College in 1981. L.C. wrote Total AutoBody Repair, a textbook now in the 3rd edition, that is used in high schools and colleges all over the U.S. and in some foreign countries. The work became the second best seller of technical work for Sam's Publishing Company and is distributed by McGraw-Hill Publishing Company. L.C. also was a feature writer for Auto Body and the Reconditioned Car magazine for four years. Mr. Rhone was an active member of Hillsdale Baptist Church in Centerpoint and enjoyed participating in Teen Plus activities and the Senior Adult Choir. He served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. Prior to moving to Birmingham, he lived in Opp, AL, where he attended First Baptist Church and served as deacon and Sunday School teacher. While living in Tuscaloosa, L.C. attended Forest Lake Baptist Church where he also served as Sunday School teacher and was ordained as a deacon. L.C. is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Opal Hill Rhone; his daughter, Brenda Moxley (David) of Birmingham, and his son, Curtis Rhone (Jean) of Vestavia; grandchildren, Eric Yates of Birmingham, Mark Yates of Morris, Troy Rhone of Mountain Brook and Lori Rhone of Vestavia; great grandson, Jackson David Yates; a brother, Luther Rhone (Margaret) of Sedro Wooley, Washington; many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He will be sorely missed. The family would like to thank New Beacon Hospice for their loving care and support. The family will receive friends Monday, January 23, 2006 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Ridout's Gardendale Chapel with Ron Pate and William Wyatt Rhone officiating. Burial will follow at Sulphur Springs Cemetery in Blount County. Ridout's Gardendale Chapel directing.
