Hi John,
I think you may be right about Ellis Island though I do not have any proof either. I grew up believing I was of Irish extraction because of the name but have since learned that the roots are German. And I have heard(and it makes sense to me) that the name probably derives from one of the Germanic names for people from the Rhine Valley.
