In Reply to: Thomas Cornell 1731 and Jenny Foster by Michael Paton of 213

Back in February 1986, I spent several months researching this line with a friend of mine (now deceased) who was the a direct 3 times great-grandson of Latham and Suzanna Wood, throught the following line of Benajmin (their son), Halsey (grandson), Edward (great-grandson), Robert (great-great-grandson).

From what I gathered then, Thomas Cornell was the son of George & Elizabeth (Thurston) Cornell who married 16 Jan 1728 in Newport, RI. Thomas was born in Portsmouth, RI on 22 Sep 1731; he would have married Jennie Foster (parents undetermined) ca 1754 in Portmouth, RI area. Their son Latham was supposedly born in Portsmouth, RI in 1755, married in Coventry, RI in March of 1777 to Susanna Wood, and died in Coventry, RI on 20 Jan 1803. Unfortunately, I haven't returned to finish off these lines. I did spend an entire day at the Coventry town hall, and have a copy of a deed from Latham and Susannah to their son, Benjamin Cornell, dated 3 March 1798; sold a parcel for $107 described as follows:

"One certain tract of land situate lying and being in Coventry aforesaid and is butted and bounded as followeth (viz) Easterly on a Highway Southerly on land belonging to Robert Greene, and westerly on land belonging to William Greene, Esq. and northerly bu land belonging to the said Latham Cornell, and the north line to be (illegible, but seems to be parralel) line with the south line and the precise quantity of Ten Acres, neither more nor less."

This comes from page 250 of the Coventry Land records; it was marked (X) by both Latham and Susannah, and witnessed by Benjamin Wickes, and Joseph Wickes, Jr., Justice of the Peace, and recorded by W. Stone, Town Clerk

The rest of the line seems to be as follows:

George & Elizabeth Thurston (Samuel & Abigail Clarke)
m Newport, RI 16 Jan 1728

Thomas & Martha Freeborn (Gideon & Sarah Brownell)
m Portsmouth, RI 26 Mar 1696

Thomas & Susannah Lawton (George & Elizabeth Hazard)
m Portsouth, RI 1674

Thomas & Elizabeth (Fiscock?)
m ca 1653 (I also have in pencil: New York 2 Nov 1642?)

Thomas & Rebecca Briggs
m Saffron-Walden, ENG. 1623.

As I said, I never finished or proved this lineage, but it seemed satisfactory at the time I did it. Perhaps it will help,

Dennis Boudreau
