Hi Flo, Yes, it's true that Narragansett Indian burials were omitted from the new book on Charlestown cemeteries. I'm not sure what conversations took place between the authors and representatives of the Narragansetts. The introduction to the book includes the following; "The Narragansett Tribal Nation is a major part of Charlestown's history and it was not our intent to omit their cemeteries from this book. It was mutually agreed upon to assemble a seperate publication for their own use and to share at their own discretion." While you and I, and most researchers, have nothing but the best intentions regarding genealogical records there are a few people who have created problems. Torn, erased, or altered records have become such a problem at the Charlestown Town Hall that some vital records are restricted. The possibility of a Narragansett casino has created the "Wannabee" tribe. Genealogy is a hobby for most of us, but for the "Wannabees" it could mean $$$. The new book itself is a gem. It's full of color photographs, notes, and quotes from books and newspapers. It's almost a primer on local history, genealogy, and burial practices. I understand that a book on Richmond cemeteries is in the future. Tom Clarke Notify Administrator about this message?
