It would appear that John Gardiner was living in Colorado prior to 1901.
In 1880, a John Gardner, age 36, b RI, occ. carpenter, was recorded at Eagle River, Summit, Colorado.
In 1900, John Gardner, b May 1841 RI, age 59, married 36 years, occ. carpenter, was recorded at Manitou, El Paso, Colorado.
I had trouble located Esther (Verry) Gardiner in the 1880 and 1900 but finally found her in East Greenwich:

In Providence RI Vital Records:
John F. Gardner b 28 Jun 1870, son of John G. and Esther
Charles F. Gardner died 23 Sep 1869 age 1 yr., son of John G.
