William Carpenter, the immigrant, settled in that part of old Paxtuxet that later became Cranston. In his 1901 History and Genealogy of the Carpenter Family in America, Daniel Hoogland Carpenter showed a map which located a spot bordering the Pawtuxet River where Carpenter may have had land. He reported that there was a monument standing at that time in memory of the Carpenter family. The map shows the intersection of Waite Dr. and Warwick Avenue which form two boundaries to a large square. The monument was reported to be situated in the northwest section of that square. I see on a modern map of Cranston that same square, and the same two streets. The northern edge is a thickly populated area. Does anyone know oi the Carpenter monument is still there? From the best comparison I can make, homes are built where it stood. Thanks, Barbara Martin Notify Administrator about this message?
