thought this was interesting Rhode Island Historical have these
files...just think people who are searching their
ancesters and cant find birth records should probably take an interest in these files...

The Exeter, Rhode Island, Bastard File

EXETER [Rhode Island] - There was once a time in Exeter when unwed mothers
were shipped back in carts to their town of origin to avoid being a burden
on fellow taxpayers.

A unique and little-known collection of records preserved at the Rhode
Island Historical Society Library (RIHSL) in Providence documents this
period of time.

The Exeter Bastard Files kept in two folders dated 1774 to 1809 and 1810 to
1858 shows the history of children born to single mothers in town and most
include the names of the parents, the child and his or her birth date
