Can't say for sure yet, but I suspect that he was born in NJ as was his brother Isaac. It is interesting that in the census that I have found for Isaac he was either born in Md or Pa but his father paid taxes in NJ in 1806--two years after Isaac's birth. Perhaps their geography wasn't so good---"back East somewhere" was a possible answer given by a member of the family and translated by the census taker. 'Tis a puzzlement at any rate.
