Samuel Spencer was born probably in March of 1860 in Washington Co PA, son of James and Ellen (Walker) Spencer. He appears as a four-month-old child in his father's household in the census that year. Ellen died shortly after Sam was born, and he was adopted by Allfree H. and Mary Rial and taken to Hancock County in northwestern Ohio, where they appear in the 1870 and 1880 census. "Alfrey", born Aug 1822, and Mary are still there in 1900.

Sam was given the Rial surname. When he was 27 one of his brothers searched and found him, and over the years he was reunited with all his living siblings.

Samuel Edward Rial was apparently married twice. The second marriage was to Sarah Kabus in 1889. In 1911 he was living in St. Louis MO. He owned a drygoods store and a 160-acre-farm. He wrote that he was unmarried at the time, but that he had been married and had two daughters - one around 25 and the other 5. The older girl's name is not known. The 5-year-old is believed to have been Teresa E. Rial, listed as age 3 in 1910 in Tuscarawas Co OH, the niece of Frederick Groh.

The Social Security Death Index shows Teresa Rial b 9 Sep 1906, d 15 Jan 1988, last payment sent to ZIP code 44707 Stark Co OH.
