The following is copied, from a query that I posted, on the Spain Genforum. There are three facts:1.Maturin is of Spanish origin,2.Ricart is predominantely of Spanish origin, and 3.The Channel Islands were a refuge for Jews and Protestants, fleeing the Spanish and French Inquisitions. In that light, the reply(dated 02 Jan. 02) was:
"I am a descendant of a Pedro Ricart y Marti who emigrated to the Dom. Rep. in the 1800s from Villanueva y Geltru, province of Barcelona, Spain. It is a catalan name, of jewish origin, I belive. There were also some Ricarts that had previously immigrated to Philadelphia, Pa. I have made a geneology of the Ricarts, but only up to this ancestor. If you find out the name in Spain, let me know as I wish to trace it further. I now live in California, where are you?
Lillian Mejia Martin. (Ricart was my mother's maiden name)"
My hypothesis is that the Ricart family (who became George and Maturin Ricker, of Maine, via the Channel Islands)) would likely be originated from a family, near Barcelona.(I have seen Geltru, somewhere else, also).
As to religion, I have found nothing to support the family being of a particular religion, back some generations. The presence of a family, with a Spanish surname, in the Islands, would tend to indicate they MAY have come there, for religious reasons, and the inquisitions.Fire away, if interested.
