I am a member of the Stafford Township Historical Society of Manahawkin, New Jersey. We have learned, from the initial ship's register, that Johnson Rideout was the builder of the ship Powhattan, launched in 1835. We wish to obtain information on her construction, construction plans, pictures/photographs, etc.
In 1854,the Powhattan was carrying German emigrants from Havre to New York. It encountered a violent storm off Long Beach Island and was grounded on a sandbar. Because of the horrible weather, rescue equipment did not arrive until too late. The ship was destroyed, with all hands lost.
Twenty eight of the bodies washed ashore on the local beach and are buried in the cemetery of the Old Baptist church that serves as our historical and cultural center.
Although the vessel was a total loss,it spurred local congressmen to establish a paid Life Saving Service. Subsequently, this service involved into the US Coast Guard!
As part of our mission to remember and retain local history for future generations, we wish to obtain a comprehensive story about the ship, including its history from its creation. Any assistance we can get in that area will be greatly appreciated.
