My grandfather was born in Winona, Minnesota in the 1880s to William and Wilhelmina Rieck. There were about 8 children, including two named Martin who died in infancy and were buried somewhere in Winona. Growing up, I was told our family was "German" but in looking at census records in the historical society, dating to when my grandfather was a child, the family apparently referred to itself as "Prussian" to the census taker.
Growing up there were very few Riecks in the St. Paul-Minneapolis area; the phone book now lists quite a large number. We pronounced our name without the "e" (as in "Rick") but I don't know how widespread this is (believe me, it was confusing growing up!).
Would love to know if we have relatives out there somewhere! I can locate more specific family tree information through my mother (my father, Charles Donald Rieck, is deceased) and would be happy to compare notes.
