Origin of the Surname Rife

In my research of the Rices, I seem to keep running into Rifes and Riffes. I wonder if perhaps someone spelled Rice as Rise and with the old script, it ended up being Rife. I have traced my husband's line of Rice back to Thomas Rhys who immigrated from England in 1683 and was of Welsh extraction. His name was changed to Rice. Many of his descendants migrated from Hanover Co., VA into KY and in my husband's case, his gggrandmother, Cindarella Gollihue Rice Stiltner, moved from KY to Buchanan Co., VA around 1890 after she married Frederick Stiltner.
I was once told I could not be married to a Rice from Buchanan Co. as there were only Rifes there! I have found many Rifes in KY and they married into the Rice family.
Hoping someone can provide me with some answers. Thanks in advance.
Martha Rice
