Greetings, The Rice family has had an ongoing Y-DNA project for over a year and the results have been tremendous. We are able to sort out various lines where adequate documentation is lacking. I am seeking a male descendant of Gabriel Riffe who will agree to testing. Gabriel's dau, Sarah, m. Elijah Rice, son of Ezekiel b. 1777 in Wythe County, VA. The Rifes and Rices are very confused in the records of Montgomery and Wythe counties as they used similiar names. This problem is compounded by the old handwriting. The marriage license of my husband's ancestors, William Rice b. 1756 who m. Margaret Hays in 1787 in Montgomery County, shows his name as "Rife". This may have meant "Rise" as the letter "S" appeared as "F" in the old handwriting. "Rise" is often the phonetic spelling of "Rice", but I would like to be sure the Rices did not change their names along the way! If you are a male with the surname of Rife, please contact me. This project may help answer some of the questions involved in Rife genealogy as I know there has been a question whether the Riffes of the Shenandoah Valley were the same family who settled in southwest VA. Thanks in advance. Martha Rice Ricesouthern@aol.com Notify Administrator about this message?
