My mother's name was Frances Elizabeth Riffe.
She is descended from Johann George Reiff who immigrated from the Palatinate in Germany in the late 1600's to Pennsylvania. Her ancestors came down from Pennsylvania to southwest Virginia in the late 1700's's and settled around Wythe County. The name was originally Reiff and has gone from that to Reif, Rife, Riffe. all being the same family and there are many in southwest Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky. My great-great grandfather John Peter Rife came from Tazewell County, Va. to Lawrence Co/ Ky in about 1826-1827. This name is definitely German. Hope this helps.
