Lillian, I am descended from Mary Rutledge, widow Rife, and Peter Chambliss. From copies of letters written by other members of the family I was under the impression that Mary Rutledge was born in South Carolina and either the daughter or neice of the Governor of South Carolina. I haven't been able to document this information. Mary Rutledge married first a Mr. Rife (I haven't been able to prove who he was. Have been looking since 1980, no luck. Mary Rutldge, widow Rife and Peter Chambliss moved to Mississippi and then to Louisiana. There is a lot of Court Records in the Courthouse in Lake Providence, East Carroll Parish, Louisiana and some court records in Washington County, Mississippi regarding Chambliss, Wade, and Rifes. I have proved the children of Peter Chambliss and Mary Rutledge, widow Rife. Mary Rutledge was his third wife. He married 1st Mary Dickerson and had one daughter, Mary Chambliss who married Marvell Mills and had a large family. Peter Chambliss married 2nd Elizabeth Corbin and had Peter Corbin Chambliss, John S. Chambliss, and a daughter, named Elizabeth, who married and died before her eighteenth birthday. Peter married 3rd Mary Rutledge, widow Rife. I have like I said never found the Mr. Rife she married.
