the surnames of rife and riffe are derived from reiff,which is of german orgin havingoriginated from the palatinate provience of southern germany. reiff is pronounced as rife with the german pronunciation of _ie having the long i sound the americanized spelling has undergone variations but basically the letters have only been arranged differently jtr
