George Riggle of Benton County, Iowa, (1827-1872)
George J. Riggle was born about 1827 in Harrison, Ohio. He married Manerva Lane on August 24, 1854, in Benton, Iowa. They had seven children during their marriage: Jacob H., Margaret Jane, Catherine, Isaac Richard, Daniel Filmore, George F., and an unnamed male baby. He died on November 25, 1872, in Shellsburg, Iowa, at the age of 45, and was buried in Benton, Iowa.
George's parents were George Riggle, born in about 1801 in PA, and Margaret Grim, whom he married on 16 Aug 1824 in Harrison Co, OH.George Jr. had the following siblings:Daniel, Obadia, Margaret, Nancy, and David, most of whom are listed in the 1850 US census in Cedar Co, IA, in the household of Jacob Shawver, whom they moved from Ohio with (also in 1840 US census). There was a probate notice dated 24 June 1868 for Obadia listing heirs as David Riggle, George Riggle, Abraham Riggle, Isaac Riggle, Margaret Allen, Nancy Ackerly, Washington Ackerly, and Sophia Renicker (Source: Dyson, Geraldine, compiler, Vinton Eagle, Benton County, Iowa, Probate Notice Index, The (Benton County, IAGenWeb Project, Online database), Record for George J. Riggle.). Cedar Co., IA, marriage records brides' index lists Nancy Riggle and Washington Ackerly. So it's pretty clear that the Nancy Ackerly and George Riggle of Obadiah's probate notice were related, probably siblings, since George Sr. probably predeceased Obadiah. I haven't been able to place Abraham or Sophia yet, but all the others were siblings. The fact that the probate notice was in The Vinton Eagle ties them all to Benton Co. I've found US Census listings from 1850 in Cedar Co, IA, for this family, as well as the 1840 census for Carroll Co, OH, where most of the siblings were born.Interestingly, there are no Riggles in Benton Co until the 1854 IA State Census. Also interesting is the fact that there was a Rebecca Dolan in the 1850 US Census in Cedar Co, IA; she later married George Riggle Sr, and they are listed in the 1856 IA census in Cedar Co along with Nancy and a new son named Isaac.
