For Marie Myers,
Hi Marie,
I have just taken the Riggs DNA test, so I hope the results will show up any relationship to other Riggs lines.
This is how I got the Melichop information:
Land tract A121 Accomack County was owned by John and Jemima Riggs:
Note: From Accomack Land Causes1728-1825. Compiled by Stratton Nottingham.
Page 4-5:
William Beavans, Jr. vs.- Partition Suit.
John Riggs and Jemima, his wife, late Jemima Melichop, late of Accomack County, spinster.
That the said William Beavans and John Riggs and Jemima, his wife, in right of the said Jemima, hold an undivided one messuage and 216 acres with the appurtenances in Pungoteague Neck on Assawoman Creek.23 Feb 1741 -- p.53
From Whitelaw's--Virginia's Eastern Shore, page 1178:
Land tract A121S
John Millechops Part
1740--He died intestate, and the next year division was made of his land, William Beavans, Jr., getting the eastern part, and John and Jemimah Rigs the western.
1742---Nicholas Millechops ll left the Rigs land to his son Nicholas lll and he and his wife Susanna promptly sold to Beavans. The deed recited that the land had been sold to his father by the Rigs' by a General Court deed; also that Beavans had aquired the other half by purchase from Thomas and Ann Cade; no record was found of this latter sale, so it also may have gone through the General Court. The assumption is now made that Jemimah Rigs and Ann Cade were the daughters and co-heirs of John Millechops.
Below is the last time I found John Riggs mentioned in Accomack Co. Va records. I assume he was selling off the last of his land before moving on to North Carolina.
Land tract A55--1754---JOHN RIGGS bought 100 acres east of the land from John and Comfort Henderson, and in this sale the names of Jonathan and Anne West did not appear. The next year RIGGS sold both parcels to Edmund Scarburgh and in 1764 he ( wife Mary ) left to his son John.
So I assume John and his wife Jamimah left Accomack County for North Carolina in 1755.
If you would like me to send you all the records I have on John and Jamimah, please ask and I will copy them and e-mail them to you.
David Harrison Riggs
