Mysterious trip East by Riggs family about 1789

Does anyone have any idea why the family of Timothy O. Riggs, born about 1760 Surry County, N.C., migrating west, would turn around and travel to CT? where one of their children is recorded being born? they had already migrated westward from New Jersey to N.C. Quite a distance already. What would make them turn around and travel even farther back east to CT? Researchers of this Timothy line. Got any ideas? I realize they might have sailed out of N.C. to CT. But again, why?
