William Riggs was born c1844 in the lower part of Camden County, NC. The official name of the town is Old Trap, but in reality his parents lived a little over a mile South of the crossroads called Goose Creek, today the road is named Texas Road but in 1844 it was named Wigwam. His mother was Elizabeth Harrison (most likely the daughter of William "Billy" Harrison). There is some debate over the name of his father. Elizabeth was married to a man names Isaac Riggs, Isaac was living in 1840 but was gone in 1850. He most likely passed away sometime between 1840 and 1850. It has long been told in the Old Trap area that William was an "outside child" or in todays words "born outside of wedlock".
The 1850 Camden County Census list William's family as:

I do not know why Elizabeth and her family were listed as Miggs. She may have had a speech impediment, bad spelling on the census takers part, or any one of many reasons. In this area the job of census taker was not earned it was given to political allies and out of work kin.
On the 10th of Aug 1862, William got involved in the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army, as did 48 of his friends. He was assigned to Co. D 1st NC Reg. where he served until 27 June 1865. On his army papers he is listed as a tall man of 5' 8" with a light complexion, blue eyes and light hair. After the war he was a farm hand, a farmer and keeper of the wind mill. Shiloh (who fought for the South) had 4 windmills, but after the war it was not safe for Old Trappers to go to Shiloh nor was it safe for anyone from Shiloh to enter into the Old Trap area. Today the road leading to the 4 mills is called Milltown Rd. and the road leading to William's
In 1865 William married Martha Burgess daughter of Hezikiah and Mary Kight Burgess of Old Trap. Martha was born in May of 1845 and died on 13th Jan 1913 at her home on Mill Landing Rd. (now One Mill Road). William died in Sept 1899 in the field next to his home.

When William came home from the war he tried to call on a young lady named Martha Burgess, for some unknown her parents didn't like William and tried to block the romance. Having fought for the North had nothing to with because Martha had brothers and uncles who also fought for the North. William had a little money saved from the war so he had a painting done of himself, then he went to Martha's house and had the painter do a picture of Mary, Martha's mother. Once he won the old lady over it was just a matter of time before he married Martha.
