From her notes:
Death of Wesley Barnes
Wesley Hall Barnes was born in the state of Maryland, Sept. 1, 1814 and died at his home near Newcastle, Belmont Co., Ohio, Feb. 20, 1892 aged 77 years 5 mos. and 20 days. his ancestors upon his mother side were from Philadephia, his mother's name being Ruth Hall- Barnes. Her maiden name was carried with his own, Wesley Hall Barnes. The strong Methodist proclivities of both families are also indicated. The date of conversion and joining the church cannot be ascertained but these important experiences occured in early life. His life revealed the combined traits of the two lines of his descent - the English perseverance and the Welch fidelity of character. On the 23rd of Feb. 1843 he married Miss Emily Williams of Belmont Co., the Rev Philip Greene officating. Three days more and their happy union on earth would have continued forty-nine years. Five children were given to their care. The eldest Archia Ann Barnes now the wife of Eli Garretson of Middletown, Va. Her absence at this time is caused by the sickness of herself and husband. The next born, Lewis Clark Barnes passed to a soldier's reward from the city of Nashville, Dec. 10, 1864. The noble father and brave son have met beneath the banner of Everlasting Peace. Ephriam Kinney Barnes located at Delta, Ohio, was the next eldest. On July 12 1853 Dorsey Hall Barnes was born and nine months later was borne back to heaven. The youngest is Rev Charles Wesley Barnes located at Springfield, Ohio. Of the family three are gone and four are waiting. The most of the active life of Bro. Barnes was spent in Belmont County. His parents died when he was but nine years of age and his career has been wholly self-made. From earliest boyhood his life was one of self-sacrifice for the good of others. His life was deeply religious, but was manifested by strict integrity and conscientiousness rather than ny religious feeling, but it was deep and hidden. His mind was philosophic and it was his delight to search into the deep things of God. His last words to one of his sons were "Remember whatever may be the circumstances by which you are surrounded, remember to put your trust in the LOrd and everything will come out all right." The other son states that just prior to the last attack of unconsciousness he sang the songs he used to sing and uttered a prayer of soul touching confidence, resigning all to the keeping all to the keeping of Jesus. He then became unconsciousness and entered upon the final struggle, which lasted thirty-six hours before the Angel of Death came off victor. In his last moments his breathing became easier and he passed into the "great beyond" without a struggle-- quietly and peacfully. S. A. Peregoy
