A brief history of Wayne County, Illinois: Wayne County was created on March 26, 1819 from part of Edwards County in southeastern Illinois. It originally included the southern half of present-day Clay County and the southwest part of present-day Richland County. With the formation of Clay County on December 23, 1824, Wayne County was trimmed down to its present-day boundaries. The county was named for Anthony Wayne, a general in the Revolutionary War and Indian fighter in the Old Northwest Territory. The county seat was established in Fairfield in the center of the county. On the evening of November 17, 1886, the court house in Fairfield burned, destroying all of the accumulated marriage, land, and probate records. So, uncovering one's family history in Wayne County presents a particular challenge. The use of federal and state census records and other alternate sources such as cemetery records, newspaper abstracts, church records along with information contained in post-burn official records becomes very important. Many books have been produced containing much of this information. George Marvel settled the family farm in Fairfield, Illinois in 1846, which is documented in tax receipts. In 1850 a Sheepskin deed was made out and today is framed in the residence of Billy Marvel (1995). George Marvel's headstone in Brown Cemetery says: (Stone broken in the middle). "Farewell, my wife and children all, From you a father Christ doth call, Mourn not for me it is vain; To call me to your sight again."(1) Reference: Mr. Billy Marvel and John Earl Marvel - September 10, 1995. George Marvel is the fifth child of Elisha and Orpha (Rogers). He was born in Green County, Georgia near the present day town of Greenboro, in the year of 1803. When six years of age, he moved with his parents to Livingston County, Kentucky. After two years, they moved on to Gibson County, Indiana where he grew into manhood. George Marvel married three times. Records in Gibson County, Indiana show he married Ruth Jourdon, February 12, 1829. He married Elizabeth McGill on April 9, 1839. Records show he married Jane (maiden name unknown) sometime before 1850. He died in Wayne County, Illinois in 1876. George Marvel was the father of eleven children: James A. (1829), John (1831), Elizabeth (1839), Joseph (1841), John (1843), William (1846 - he died before 1860), Francis M. (1850 - Franks tomestone states 1851 as date of birth), Ellen J. (1851), Orpha (1855), Nancy J. (1857) and Florence (1860). Source: (1) Source: Wayne County, Illinois Cemetery Inscriptions - Vol. X
