Stokes County and the timeframe indicated for your John are definitely interesting. Two sons (Thomas and Charles) of Thomas Rigg (d. 1761) moved first to Henry Co. VAabout December 1785 and later to Stokes Co., NC about 1793.Thomas Rigg, Jr. died there, leaving a large family. Both Thomas and Charles appear in a number of public documents related to land purchase/sale, the survey of a road in Stokes Co., settlement of
Thomas's estate, guardianship of Thomas Rigg's children, and marriage bonds. Many of the descendents of Thomas Rigg and Charles Rigg moved on from Stokes Co.Some moved north to the KY-OH-WV border by 1812.Others moved first to Georgia, then to St. Clair Co., Alabama.
I have a fair abount of information on Susannah, Thomas, Benjamin, Townley and Charles.I'd be glad to know more about your John Rigg and otherwise compare notes.
I've scanned the 3 Dec 1761 inventory and the 19 Mar 1770 account for the estate of Thomas Rigg.If anyone is interested in the (large) images, let me know. All of this takes some careful reading. The reference to children being "at age" may have meant "of tender age" (between 14 and 21) as of 19 Mar 1770.The debts included a relatively large quantity of tobacco owed to Jane Bruce.Jane was the widow of Charles Bruce. In the final account of Charles Bruce's estate, it noted that Thomas Rigg owed the estate 2,400 lbs. of tobacco. My sense is that Thomas Rigg leased land from the Bruce family.Thomas Rigg also owed 216 lbs. of tobacco to Dr. John Corry.
That raises more questions about the cost and quality of medical services at the time than I care to think about. The account mentions a payment of 450 lbs. of tobacco to Susannah Rigg... based on the timing, this was NOT his daughter. The 1761 inventory mentions John Rigg and Francis Posey as nearest of kin.My sense is that these were not children of Thomas either.
At the time of the Revolution there were other Rigg families living in Charles County, who were not among the descendents of Thomas. This would include Matthew Rigg of Port Tobacco. There was also (at least one) Peter Rigg in Charles Co.One Peter Rigg purchased land in Henry Co. VA in December 1785.There was also a Richard Rigg in Fairfax Co., VA who doesn't seem to tie in directly.
There was some indication that Townley, Benjamin, and John Rigg moved from Charles Co., MD to Fairfax Co., VA and appeared in early tax lists.Based on what I've seen of this, they appeared to have lived in the extreme southern part of Fairfax Co., just south of what is now Ft. Belvoir, close to
Rt. 1.
There are records of the Rigg family in Charles Co., MD going back to at least 1676.I suspect that they may have settled there a few years earlier to be mentioned in two wills dated in November 1676.If Thomas is descended from the earlier Rigg families, which seems likely, those living in 1676 may have been in his great grandparent's generation.
Fortunately virtually all of the Charles Co.
records survive and have been microfilmed.
