Hello Kevin
As a follow up to my post about Charles H Rigler's mother, Dixon.I have since read Paula Rigler's post on this forum from 7/3/01.She states that her grandfather Henry (sic) was born in London and that the family was evacuated to Devon in WW2.This fits completely with data I have on a separate London database (my family seems to come from London so I keep the data separate for ease).
John Henry Rigler married a woman called Dixon in Croydon in 1927.There are then no births in London to a woman nee Dixon until 1933, _after_ a woman nee Dixon has had three children in Easington. This London-based woman nee Dixon then has five children in Croydon, the last in Sep 1939.A woman nee Dixon then starts to have children in barnstaple. This fits completely with Paula's evacuation story.
Thus:
John Henry marries Dixon in Croydon in 1927.The following children are then born to a woman/women nee Dixon (I believe it is just the one woman):
Mar 1928 Norma in Easington
Mar 1931 Charles H in Easington
Jun 1931 Olive in Easington
Dec 1933 Yvonne back in Croydon
Mar 1936 Shirley in Croydon
Jun 1937 Peter in Croydon
Jun 1938 Roy in Croydon (the uncle Roy you mentioned)
Sep 1939 Robert in Croydon
Sep 1941 Mavis I in Barnstaple
Jun 1943 Michael J in Barnstaple
Mar 1947 Roger in Barnstaple
Jun 1948 David in Barnstaple
Jun 1948 Shirley A in Barnstaple
Sep 1949 Jack in Barnstaple
The Croydon dates fit completely within the gap between Easington and Barnstaple.
In her 7/3/2001 post Paula suggests that the father of Henry (surely John Henry?) was a Romanian gypsy.I am not sure whether this fits with the data that I have.A John Henry was born in Wandsworth in 1900 (there was a John Henry Z born in 1882 in Portsea but this man would have been 67 when Jack was born in Barnstaple in 1949).A man named Charles Drake Rigler was married in Wandsworth in 1893 and then 5 children were born in Wandsworth who were probably all his - Isabella (b 1893), Charles (b 1895 d 1900), Robert (b 11/2/1898), John H, Ethel Rose (b 1903).Charles Drake Rigler's origins could possibly be ascertained by getting his birth certificate. It would at least give his father's forename which would show whether it was Romanian. It is difficult to see any man in the London database who could have been Charles Drake Rigler's father, however, so it is perfectly possible that he was an immigrant.
However, I think this is not the case.In the 1881 Census a Charles Rigler born in London aged 13 (and thus born circa 1868) was living with his stepfather Robert Bolton and his mother Isabella at 131 Lillington Street, Westminster. His mother Isabella was born circa 1843 in Poole, Dorset. If I am right about Charles Drake Rigler being one of your antecedents then it seems very likely that his father came from Poole (as so many Riglers do), married a local girl, moved to London and then died there before 1881.
The only male Riglers to have married in Poole in the ten years prior to Charles Drake Rigler's birth were:
Dec 1864William
Dec 1867 James
As a male was born in 1870 in Kensington (the Registration District where Charles Drake Rigler was born in 1868)and his name was either Ernest William (his name recorded at birth) or William Ernest (his name recorded at his death in 1871) my money is on william.50p says this William Rigler married in Poole is your ancestor.I'll leave it to you to prove it!Let me know.
Best wishes
Jonathan Reggler
