Thanks for your e-mail. Just to put you in the picture.
When Fr. Harold was released from China through Hong Kong, and then on to Ireland he was met at Dublin Airport by a member of the Irish Dept. of Foreign Affairs Kathleen Rigney (nee Corrish) and Michael and Peg Rigney. The latter couple were my late fathers parents (Liam F. Rigney) and the person from F.A. was married to my dads brother James/Jim, but we always called him uncle Seamus.
My dad used to tell us he remembered Fr. Harold visiting Ballindrinnan in Co. Offaly, the old family farm, when he was a young boy, and Fr. Harold giving him money to go and get 'candy in the drugstore'!!!! This was 1930s rural Ireland and he did not know what candy was or what a drugstore was either. But he loved to tell us the story.
Another story was when Fr. Harold was in the Phillipeans wearing his military uniform. He stopped at a street corner, and before he knew it there was a girl sitting next to him!! He saw the situation and did not want to embarress the girl, so he promptly took her out to dinner in a local resturant and then drove her back to where he had picked her up. Certainly a very well clued in man of the cloth, who had the kindest of souls.
Finally, before I bore you to death, my full name is Philip Vincent HAROLD Rigney. It is a name I wear with pride and a great deal of honour. Many don't know why, but those who read his book can understand. I am a secondary school (high school) teacher in Dublin, married with a 16 daughter.
Must away. Thanks for making contact. Please do so again.
(Philip V.H. Rigney)
