Howdy Judi
As you know, I'm researching all the US Rigsbys.
Most or all of the ones in OR and WA are from my own Rigsby
branch. Two brothers, James W and Walter W Rigsby, moved to
OR from MO around 1850. Another brother, John, may have
gone with them. John vanishes after 1850, though, so I'm
not sure about him. These men were sons of James II Rigsby
+ Sarah A Thompson, James II being a brother of my ancestor
John Rigsby.
Apparently James W briefly lived in Canada, as he is not in
the US on the 1860 census. Walter is in Jackson Co OR that
year, living with a couple of men named Capps.
By the 1870 census, James and Walter have moved to Walla
Walla Co WA, and are living together.
In 1871 Walter married Anna Crumpacker, and in 1878 James
married Nancy Crumpacker, Anna's sister. Nancy had
previously been married to Charles White, and had several
children by him. Walter + Anna had a daughter Sarah Ann in
1873, and then Anna died in 1874.
On the 1880 census Walter is living in Columbia Co WA with
his daughter, and James + Nancy are not far away. James has
a son James W, as well as the White children from Nancy's
first marriage, who appear to have taken the Rigsby name.
James + Nancy had a daughter Martha in 1880 who died in
1882. They also had a daughter Emma in 1882. In 1883 Nancy
died, and in 1885 James died. I don't know what happened to
Emma, but in 1900 son James is back in Walla Walla Co,
attending school at Whitman College.
In 1885 Walter married Ellen Huffman. In 1886 they had a
son Radford or Redford. By 1900 they are living in Garfield
Co WA, where Walter died in 1912.
Another brother of James and Walter, David T, came to OR
later. He lived with his parents through 1860. David
married Charity Brown in 1855 and had a daughter Mahala,
but they do not show up with him on the census. Charity
died soon after Mahala was born.
By 1870 David had moved to Jefferson Co CO. About 1875 he
married Mary January. They apparently moved to MT territory
briefly, where they had a daughter Alice and a son James.
In 1880 they were in Clear Creek Co CO, but before 1884
they had moved to OR, where they had a son Charles. By 1900
they were in Malheur Co OR, where David died in 1914.
There are two other Rigsbys in OR, but I haven't been able
to identify them. The 1900 census for Jackson Co OR has an
Edwin Rigsby, born in MO, father born in KY. He should be
related to the others, but at this time I don't know how.
Also in 1900, in Multnomah Co OR, is an Ellen Rigsby, born
in IL, parents born in Ireland. This one really confuses
me, as I don't know of the Rigsbys ever being in Ireland.
I hope that helps. Are you connected to these Rigsbys?
