Steven W.
I am just getting started with my Rini side, starting with a great-grandfather probably named Giovanni Rini who was a produce vendor who ended up in Detroit from Sicily but I don't know by way of where/what possibly stops or relatives in between.
I have found a lot of potential information using this link to the newest development/pilot version on the FamilySearch.org site because the 1900 US Census is now up and viewable/printable and indexed as well as more updated birth, marriage records etc also originals scanned and viewable/printable--always at no charge.

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=0

THERE ARE ONLY 19 EXACT AND CLOSE MATCHES FOR A JOSEPH RINI IN OHIO, ON ONE PAGE. Not too hard to check out if you know his children's names. You should be able to write for your mother's birth certificate and work back from there as well.

Is it possible his christened name was Giuseppe? and later Americanized to Joseph?

Is it possible your Joseph lived in Detroit for awhile as a young married man?
