Please, if you have any information on the people below, anything to add or correct I would appreciate hearing from you. My e-mail address is at the bottom. Thank you.

First Generation

1. Rachel Rittenberg, F. Born in 1832-34. Rachel died aft 1903, she was 71.

Robert's obit states that he married Mrs. Rachel CURTISS.

I believe Rachel died after 1903, because that is the latest date on the paperwork in the pension files of Robert Leasum.

Personal From Tracy: While the pension file of Robert Leasum does not give a birthdate for his wife Rachel, it does contain several afidavits that give her age. Based on the dates of these afidavits and the ages given for her in each case, I believe she was born in 1832.

On 10 Jan 1852 when Rachel was 20, she first married Nereus (?) Curtis, M, in Lorain Co., OH. Nereus (?) died on 17 Aug 1854 in Kansas City, MO. Occupation: Carpenter and Joiner.

The first name of Mr. Curtis is very hard to read on the Certificate of Marriage. The name here is my best guess, based on what I can make out.

All information on Mr. Curtis at this time is from documents contained in the pension file of Robert Leasum.

On 18 Apr 1855 when Rachel was 23, she second married Robert Leasum, M, son of Jns. Leasum, M & Mary Anna Atkinson, F (1811-1887), in Green Bay, Brown County, WI. Born on 1 Feb 1832 in Baldensville, Oswego Co., NY. Robert died in Kendall, Monroe Co., WI on 1 Dec 1891, he was 59. Buried in Glendale Cemetery. Occupation: Pensioner and Stock buyer. His obit also lists farmer, lumberman and grocer. Religion: M. E. Church. Cause of death: Pneumonia. Alias/AKA: Robert Leasom.

An unbeliever most of his life, he joined the M.E. Church in full fellowship on November 9, 1891 (less than a month before his death). He was survived by his wife and one son.

Robert was five feet ten and a half inches tall, he had a dark complexion with brown hair and blue eyes.

Military: According to the book "Soldiers and Sailors of the Late War", pg. 201, Robert Leasum held the rank of Sergant in Company F, Regiment 32. His obituary adds that this Company and Regiment were with the Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. The Generations CD#3 "Civil War Muster Rolls" adds that he fought for the Union and his records are at the National Archives; microfilm box# 000559, roll# 0017, record# 00003212.

From the Adjutant General's Office, Washington, June 3, 1882.
Respectfully returned to the Commisioner of Pensions. Robert Leasum, a Sergt of Company F, 32 Regiment Wis. Volunteers, was enrolled on the 15 day of Aug., 1862 (3 yrs), at Green Bay, and is reported: Dec. 31, 1862 to Apr. 30 1865 Reseut(sp?), Mustered out with Co. June 12, 1865.

They had one child:
       2       i.       Sherman Jay (Adopted), M (1870-1936)

On 18 Apr 1896 when Rachel was 64, she third married Robert Severs, M, in Washington Harbor, Door Co., WI. Robert died on 26 Sep 1901 in Washington Harbor, Door Co., WI.

Second Generation
Family of Rachel Rittenberg (1) & Robert Leasum

2. Dr. Sherman Jay Leasum, M. Born on 4 Mar 1870 in Kendall, Monroe County, WI. Sherman Jay died in Sturgeon Bay, Door Co., WI on 31 Jul 1936, he was 66. Buried in Whitehall Cemetery. Occupation: Dentist. Education: Graduated from Keokuk Medical-Dental college. Cause of death: Serious heart ailment.

A Dentist. He was adopted by Robert and Rachel Leasum after his own mother (a friend of Rachel's) died in childbirth.

After completing his dental training he moved his family to Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

On 14 Jan 1891 when Sherman Jay was 20, he married Thea Haukum, F, in Neilsville, Presby, Clark, WI. Born on 26 Feb 1875 in Melrose, Jackson, WI. Thea died in 1956, she was 80.

They had the following children:
              i.       Charles, M (1894-1965)
ii.       Sherman Jay (Died as Child), M (1898-?)
              iii.       Robert Nels, M (-<1965)
