Was aware you were looking for family rather than counties. Many people think that Roane Co., TN is name for families that lived here - not the case as explained. Would investigate the Archibald ROANE path, as Knox Co. was Mama County to Roane, and since he was Governor, there should be information on his family. The Tennessee Blue Book has a brief paragraph on Archibad as follows: "Archibald ROANE, Gov. 1801 - 1803, Democrat.Born in Pennsylvaniea in 1760, Roane attended college and was consdiered a very well-educated man for his day.He served in the Revolutionary War under George WASHINGTON, then settled in Tennessee and worked as a lawyer, helping to write the state's first constitution in 1796.After John Sevier had served the maximum of three consecutive terms, ROANE ran for the office and was elected.During his term the state was divided into three Congressional districts because poplation was increasing rapidly.Roane was defeated for re-election by former governor Sevier. In later years Roane taught and helped promote the development of colleges in Tennessee, and served as superior court judge. He died in 1819."
Unfortunately, when Goodspeed did the Histories of the various counties in TN in the late 1800's, he did not include the ROANE family in the biographical sketches, which rather surprises me given the fact he had been such a prominent figure in TN politics and education, etc.I am sure that the McClung Collection in Knoxville has much more information on this family, but they are NOT prone to do anything in the way of research - rather farming it out to professionals in the area.
