I am seeking any information available about my ancestor Marie (or Mary) Brown of Grande-Digue, New Brunswick. Marie Brown married Charles (Charlemagne) Arsenault in Grande-Digue 29 October 1840. Their children were 1 Euphémie, who married Jude Bourgeois, 2 Sara, who married Laurent Boudreau, 3 Domitilde, who married Théophile Bourgeois, and 4 Marie, who married Magloire Cormier. Records seem to indicate that Charles died in February 1849, but funeral ceremonies were not held until the day after the baptism of daughter Marie in July 1849. (Marie was born 27 June.) Marie Brown married Pierre Robichaud, formerly her brother-in-law, 8 February 1858 (his first wife Blanche Arsenault having died in April 1857). Their children were 1 Auguste, who married Caroline (last name unknown), and 2 Marie Blanche, who married Anselme Hébert. Marie Brown was buried in Grande-Digue in 1872, and Pierre Robichaud died in 1881. This information came from church records (Grande-Digue), census records, and information posted by Mr Paul Bujold. Leaving aside the possibility that I have made errors in transcription, I believe all the data above are consistent with reality. I have seen only one record containing information about the origins of Marie Brown. Here is a transcription of that record: ------------------------- Charles Arsenault & Marie Browne ----------------------------------------------- Ce 29, 8bre 1840 ayant dispensé d'un ban de mariage en vertu de nos pouvoirs de Grand Vicaire de Mgr. l'Ev. de Charlotte Town et la publication des deux autres ayant été faite aux prônes de nos messes Paroissiales entre Charles Arsenault, maître d'école, domicilié en cette paroisse fils majeur de François Arsenault et de Clotilde Galland aussi de cette paroisse, d'une part, et Marie Browne, domiciliée en cette paroisse, fille mineure de Nicholas Brown et de défunte Phoebe Fleen (Flun?), de St André, d'autre part, ne s'étant découvert aucune empêchement, Nous Prêtre Missionaire soussigné avons reçu leur mutuel consentement de mariage et leur avons donné la bénédiction nuptiale en présence de Joseph Hébert, beaufrère de l'epoux, de Pierre Robichaud, maître de l'épouse Ant. Gagnon, Ptre ----------------------------------------------- According to this record, her parents were Nicholas Brown and Phoebe Fleen or Flun (probably the Irish name most commonly spelled Flynn). Marie’s maiden name was probably spelled Browne to emphasize the pronunciation of the “n”, distinguishing it from the Acadian name Brun. (Her father’s name may have been spelled without the final “e” because it was his own spelling, and the pronunciation didn’t matter to anyone locally.) She was probably just under 18 years old, although I am not sure of the age of majority in that time and place. Her father was alive in 1840 and her mother deceased. I have not found any record other than this mentioning either of her parents. In any case it is clear that Marie arrived in the French-speaking town of Grande-Digue with a British or Irish background, and there is probably an interesting story to that. The home town, St André, is a mystery to me. There is a town of that name in Madawaska, at the other end of New Brunswick. There seems to have been a parish or maybe a town with that name near Shediac, but I have only seen the name attached to a road on a map of that area. It is also possible that St André refers to the Catholic community of St Andrews near Charlottetown, PEI, where Irish and Highland Scottish immigrants settled. Does anyone have information about this family (or even informed speculation)? Notify Administrator about this message?
