In 1656, the Dutch were unhappy about Englishmen who had settled in Oostdorp/East Town (now Westchester, New York). The spokesman for the settlers was Lieutenant Thomas Wheeler. On March 16, 1656, the settlers informed the Governor of New Netherlands in writing that they "were willing to submit ourselves unto the government." The document was signed by Thomas Wheeler and 15 other men. I am trying to document each of the men. Two of the 15 were John Roes and Robert Roes. I suspect their names were actually John ROE and Robert ROE.
Can anyone identify these two men for me?
I suspect they had left Puritan New England for religious reasons--to escape the jurisdiction of Puritan ministers.
