JOSHUA ROE from England? How do we know that?

We know that Joshua Roe was in MD as a Christening record was found there for his son, Edward Roe. How do we know that he was an immigrant from England? Are we assuming because no prior records have been found for him, or are there records which show his arrival or state Eng as his place of origin?
