One more thing...
At at
www.ellisisland.org (or .com) there is an Ellis Island website that has recently posted immigrants ships records
for FREE at their records site. I looked up when Grampa Rohde and his
family came hoping to find more information than what I have and also,
to correct anything I had.

The website is VERY busy and so if you go there to snoop around, one
thing to remember is if it puts up a "try again" page in the middle
(or at the start)...just keep hitting the Refresh button at the top of
your Netscape or Explorer window and you will get in.

Here's what I found:

Looked up: HANS Rohde (the first to come almost 1 year prior)
Ethnicity: German from Rendsbury, Germany
Age at Arrival: 19, Single, Unmarried
Departed from: Cuxhaven, Hamburg, Germany on ship AMERIKA
(I didn't look up the ship manifest to get more on Hans)

My records show that John and Claus came later that year but I didn't
look this up -- I will go back and get more info later. On the ship
manifest for the group that came (Grampa and his father, mother,
siblings) it has hand-written by Great Grampa HINRICH Rohde (we've
spelled it Henrich all these years) that they were going to see:

"brother-in-law August Eichmeyer, Ithaca, Saunders County, Nebraska"
(this would be Great Grandma ANTJE's sisters' husband I think) "and sons
KLAUS, JOHANNES & HANS with a farm" (check out the spellings and the
German version of the names...most of them changed their names to the
American version after coming here...even Grandpa)

There's listed with this group who came, someone named Paul Braasch
from the same place in Germany. I've never heard or seen this name
but am wondering if he was related on Great Grandma Antje Hennings
Rohde's side???? He checked the same thing on the ship manifest...that
he was going to Uncle August Eichmeyer's farm. He is listed as 30
years old a male, single, from Rendsburg Germany. He could also have
been related to one of the two husbands of the Rohde girls who were
married and came with their husbands (Mary Rohde Suhr and Anna Rohde
Mahrt). I had in my records that these two sisters stayed in Germany
and came later but the ships record has them coming with the rest of
the family.

Here's the list from the Ship's (President Lincoln) manifest for
arrival date March 24, 1911 at Ellis Island:

Rohde, HINRICH, Male, 57 years 5 months, Married, from Rendsburg
Germany
Rohde, ANTJE, Female, 57 years 5 months, Married, "
Rohde, ALWINE, Female 23 years 11 months, Single, "
Rohde, HINRICH, Male, 17 years 11 months, Single, "
Rohde, ANGNESE, Female, 16 years 5 months, Single, "
Rohde, AMANDA, Female, 14 years 11 months, Single, "
Rohde, FRIEDA, Female, 11 years 5 months, Single, "
BRAASCH, Paul, Male, 30 years 3 months, Single, "
Mahrt, FRANZ, Male, 31 years 4 m., Married, "
Mahrt, ANNA, Female, 28 years 11 m., Married, "
Mahrt, WILLY, Male, 2 years 1 month, Single, "
Suhr, JOHANNES, Male, 28 years 6 months, Married, "
Suhr, MARIA, Female, 30 years 5 months, Married, "
Suhr, ANNY, Female, 3 years 1 month, Single, "

I have been trying to find out SOMETHING prior to Great Grandpa Hinrich
Rohde but only have bits and pieces. On this family who sponsored
them...I also found in another location a register of death in the
Long Island City (wherever this is) listings for deaths August 16-28,
1895:

August EICHMEYER, 2 months old died on 8/26/1895 of oedemia of the
lungs. Born 233 Vernon Avenue. FATHER: AUGUST birthplace Germany,
MOTHER: AGNES, birthplace Germany. Coroner Strong medical attendant;
Place of burial: Lutheran.

With this above information, I'm wondering if 1895 was the year the
Eichmeyer's came to America? If they were related to Great
Grandma (Hennings) Rohde -- I never had her sister's name...only the
brother-in-law (August) -- I asked Aunt Lillie Rohde Davenport about this and she called her Aunt
Eichmeyer as did other neices and nephews. But, I'm pretty sure this
obituary is for our family as AGNES (ANGNESE) was also the name Great
Grandma gave one of her own daughters.

Anyway, the whole Ellis Island website has lots to explore about what
the immigrants went through to get here and how they were "processed"
once they did get here.

I tried to e-mail you but the message was returned. I sure hope you visit this forum again!
