Dianne, You have the right name!

This is what I know. My maternal grandma was born Sarah Ellen Driffield on the 23rd Oct 1859 at 48 Newbigin St in the area of York called Groves in the Parish of St Maurice. Her father, William Henry Driffield, was a younger son who "was blessed with the wanderlust". After marying my great grandmother Elizabeth Rollisson he moved around England from job to job possibly as a "clicker" in a leather works. Strangely, all their children - 3 daughters Sarah Ellen, Harriet and Annie with another sister christian name unknown who married a Tomlinson and the young son Thomas Henry - were reputedly born in York, Elizabeth perhaps returned home to mother in Groves for each and every confinement.

Both the Driffields and the Rollissons were reputedly well known York families but I know next to nothing about them. When I was young I visited all of Elizabeth's children but today maintain contact only with a delightful lady Dr P Joan Wilkinson AM who was born and still lives in Melbourne Australia.

Joan's father, Harry Wilkinson, became Mayor of the town of Sandringham near Melbourne and it is from the meager writings of Joan's mother Loise, Thomas Henry Driffield's daughter, that most of my information is gleaned. The only further snippet of information -which is where you came in -is that Elizabeth Rollisson had a brother, name unknown, whose two sons Fred and Joe Rollisson emigrated to New Zealand in 1904. I have a marvellous photo of Elizabeth to send you if you do happen to a relative of Fred and Joe.

Hope to hear from you soon. My direct e-mail is

Best regards

Bill Kaye
