Hello Donia,
I think Hugh Roan is probably the son of James or John Rone.By piecing together land records and militia lists I have come up with a family of Henry Roan, Sr., and three sons, James, John and Henry.Henry Sr., was 50 years old sometime between 1799 and 1806.He dies after 1810.James is still on the tax list in 1823 but became over 50, between 1810 and 1823, and dies before the 1824 list. Many lists are missing.Henry Jr. has two sons, James, b. 1805 and John, b. 1803, and he moves to TN.John is only in the 1798 and 1810 tax/Militia list and he is militia but owns no property. He might have never married and lived with someone else or moved away for a while.James is probably the father of Hugh.I'm sure there must be more records about him.I have not studied Hugh, but remember mentions of him in the Mecklenburg, records.
I just came across some more Henry Roans, Sr. and Jr. Senior purchased property in 1761 in Rowan Co, NC. and they signed in German. The Jr. is probably the Mecklenburg Sr. Ages jibe.
The book for the tax list is "Mecklenburg county, NC, Will Abstracts & Tax Lists", by Ferguson.
Perhaps someone in Mecklenburg has records of these Roans. Some stayed.I'm sure there were sisters who married local boys.good luck.Evelyn
