Kathryn 'Ty' Findlay Roop, wife, mother, grandmother,
friend, child of God, celebrated 62 years of life on March
11, 2012, with her family. On March 21, just as the sun
broke through the clouds and robins announced the arrival
of Spring, and after nine years of a courageous battle
with cancer, Ty began the celebration of her new life. She
was born March 11, 1950.
Ty, the daughter of the late Vere Gentry and John Campbell
Findlay, followed in her father’s footsteps as President
of the Wytheville Office Supply which she and her husband
acquired from her father in 1972. The family treasures a
picture of Ty selling her first greeting card at the age
of two. Throughout the years, she touched the lives of
many employees and customers. Being the President of a
woman-owned company, Ty had welcomed the opportunity to
work with and designing businesses in the Coal Industry,
Banking, Industrial Manufacturing, Food Processing and
various other businesses, large and small throughout the
Southeast. She was one of the first users of the Virginia
Electronic Procurement Program and was recruited to
promote the program to businesses at colleges and
universities throughout Virginia. Ty loved calling
Wytheville her home. She graduated from George Wythe High
School and was proud of her years at Wytheville Community
College where she served as President of the Student
Council. She attended the University of Tennessee
and 'earned a graduate degree in Psychology from Radford
University. As a local business woman at the “Home of the
Big Pencil”, Ty was called on often to serve on boards and
committees. She served on the United Way Board of
Directors. Anyone attending the annual United Way Silent
Auction would find a large number of beautiful scarves
that Ty knitted, to be sold to benefit the United Way.
Those who have the good fortune of owning a “Ty Roop
Original Scarf” are to be envied. Ty served as Chairperson
of the Relay for Life Corporate Contributions Committee,
raising thousands of dollars for cancer research. Along
with Wayne, she was recognized for the Wytheville-Wythe-
Bland Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Business Leaders of
the Year Award in 2000. Ty was a life-long member of the
Wytheville Presbyterian Church. Even after Ty became ill,
she could be seen in her usual center pew in the balcony
with her beautiful scarves covering her loss of hair. She
taught Sunday School and was a regular sitter in the
nursery. She served on numerous committees including
Personnel and the Shoe Boxes for Children Ministry. Her
Church Family was an important part of her life and she
gave freely of the time and talents to benefit her church.
Ty leaves behind friends from far and wide to honor her
memory. But most important to her was her family, Wayne
Roop, her husband of 41 years; two sons, Kevin Wayne Roop,
of Edwards, CO, and Che Findlay Roop, of Wytheville, VA;
her precious daughter, Mia Campbell Massi and her husband
Kevin Massi, of Charlotte, NC, and the one she adored
most, her beautiful granddaughter, Amelia Katherine Massi;
and cousins with whom she had a close relationship.
The family will receive friends at the Wytheville
Presbyterian Church on Friday, March 23, 2012, from 5 p.m.
to 7 p.m.
A service of celebration of the life of Ty Findlay Roop
will be held at the Wytheville Presbyterian Church on
Saturday, March 24, 2012, at 12 noon, with the Reverend
Brad Simpson officiating. A reception will follow the
service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial
contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society
c/o Jean Lester, 430 W. Washington St., Wytheville, VA
24382.
Barnett Funeral Home, Wytheville, VA is handling the
arrangements.
