Thank you for your kind answer regarding the SC Ropers and their participation in the Civil War.
Actually, I did find records of Samuel and two of his brothers.Samuel went in as a Sergeant but was demoted during the 1 1/2 years he was in the Army for being AWOL and not reporting for duty. There are records showing that he was in the hospital much of that time, whether ill or wounded, I don't know.
Samuel didn't go into the Army until 2 years after it started. I imagine that many fought for the South even though they didn't own slaves--whether through peer pressure or the feeling that they were defending their homes.
