I believe that you are referring to the data posted at L. David ROPER's Roper Family History website showing:
"V.1, p.70: Abstracts of Wills, Sec. of State: William Roper of Chowan Co. 18 Aug 1729 to a friend, Jacob Butler, Wm Refield of Pasquotank, 4 Aug 1722 - Mar 23 Sons John, James & William - all my children."
It is unclear to me whether Dave has inadvertently mistranscribed the data from the cited reference OR whether he is accurately quoting the information from the reference, but that the abstract is simply WRONG if it is indicating the mention of sons of William ROPER named John, James and William. Perhaps the latter part of this entry is referring to sons of William REDFIELD.
The extant copy of the Will makes no mention whatsoever of ANY children, though it does expressly identify this William ROPER's father as John ROPER. No William REDFIELD is mentioned either.
I just posted a transcription of this Will at:
"Transcription of Will of William ROPER (d bef 04 Jan 1730 - Chowan, NC)" [1 Aug 2010 7:17PM GMT ]
I believe that this William ROPER was the son of John ROPER (b 08 Feb 1681 - South River, Anne Arundel, MD, d Bef 12 Sep 1712 - Chowan, Albemarle, NC) and grandson of William ROPER of Anne Arundel. It appears to me that William ROPER of Chowan died childless. By contrast, I believe that his brother John ROPER (b 1709) inherited the family plantation on the Chickahominy River in Charles City County occupied by 1704 and Patented in 1714. I am of the line of John ROPER (b 1709).
A digital copy of William ROPER's Will can be downloaded from the North Carolina Archives. I would be happy to e-mail you a copy.
