The Alice you seek seems to be that enumerated in Clarke County, MS, in the 1850 and 1860 Census, and enumerated in the Newton County, MS, in the 1870 Census.

The 1850 Census shows Alice THOMPSON to be age 32 and born in GEORGIA rather than in ALABAMA. She is shown to have been born in ALABAMA in the 1860 and 1870 enumerations. Her age is fairly consistent through these records, shown as 32 in 1850, 42 in 1860 and 53 in 1870.

Do you have a date and place of death of William F. and Alice THOMPSON? Have you determined whether they are they enumerated in subsequent Census returns after 1870? Have you located William THOMPSON in the 1840 Census?

There is a James W. ROPER enumerated in the 1840 Census living in Sumter County, Alabama, who would seem to be a particularly compelling candidate to be Alice's father or brother if she is a ROPER and from Sumter County, AL.
