Hello,
You most likely won't want to hear what I'm about to say.I know that through the DNA test results there is a difference in the Raper and Roper family's. With that being said I cannot tell you the amount of times I have seen in census records where the census taker has transposed Raper into Roper. This is very easy to detect by tracing the family members that are in the same household, or the parents and siblings named in the census records. You mentioned John Adams If I recall. you also were asking about the Indian Tribe, and you made mention to Pickens South Carolina. First For those who are Indian researchers The Adams family is a very well documented Cherokee family. There was a hand full of fellow Cherokee family"s that lived in community with the Adams family. One of those family's was the Raper's not the Ropers. Also the McDaniel's family. There where several others Williams family etc.I have never seen any documentation that ever mentioned a Roper family or individual. In fact my great great great great Grandfather William Raper married Jemimia Adams, a member of fore mentioned Adams family. I said all that to say I think it is a Raper family that is most likely your original heritage and not Roper. I would bee very willing to wager that your Roper name was transposed sometime way back from Raper to Roper. My Grandfather in 1919 changed our last name from Raper to Rapier. I can also show you old records that have my great great Grandfather Raper name spelled Roper, Rapper,Aper, and that was just in a 3 year span on his Civil war records.
