Barbara,
I'm sorry I didn't see your e-mail when you posted it but I've done some more work on the Row's.

I just talked to Maurice Franklin Row last week. He just turned 96. I will have to see if she had was related to the Yaples. Her name was actually Winifred Louise Montgomery. I am not aware that she was related to the Yaples.

On your second question, we've done much more research on trying to determine who Benjamin Row's ancestors were. What follows is a "status" on our research so far. Maybe you have some information that can help settle this once and for all but I think we are getting pretty close.

Our focus has been to determine the parents and grandparents of Benjamin Row. According to the family Bible, Benjamin was born on January 11, 1808. He passed away in Barbour County, West Virginia on August 26, 1879 (Date from gravestone). On his death certificate his son Andrew Jackson Row indicates Benjamin was born in Maryland. The West Virginia census from 1870 also indicates Benjamin was born in Maryland. The census also indicates Benjamin¡¦s father was born in the United States.

Background information

My research has led me to believe Benjamin descended from a Row family in the Frederick/Carroll county area of Maryland. This family is well known in that area. It originates in this country with Andreas Rau who emigrated from Germany in the mid 1700¡¦s. He initially moved to the Lancaster, PA area. He married a distant cousin Sally Row in about 1742. He and three of his sons- Arthur, Michael & George- then settled in the Taneytown-Emmitsburg, Md. area on the Monocracy River. He sold his property to his three sons in mid 1880's. All of these sons show up continually in the subsequent census years in Frederick County. After Carroll County is established during the 1830¡¦s, George Row shows up in Carroll County in the 1840 census. I suspect he was always on the east side of the river and Michael and Arthur were on the west side.

The first son Michael was born in 1750 and passed away June 14, 1831. He was married to Christina Smith and according to his will (filed in Fredericksburg) they had 13 children ¡V Lucy Ann, Michael, Mary Ann, Elizabeth, William, Margaret, Sarah, John, Samuel, Joseph, Catherine, Christina and George. Michael (and a number of other Row¡¦s) are buried in the Tom¡¦s Creek Church cemetery (Lutheran side) in Frederick County near Emmitsburg.

The second son Arthur was born March 5, 1753 and died August 3, 1823. According to his will (also filed in Fredericksburg) he and his wife (Sarah Ann) had 11 children ¡V George, Samuel, Frederick, Jacob, John, Michael, Abraham, Joseph, Julian, Elizabeth and Barbara. Arthur is buried in Tom¡¦s Creek Church Cemetery.

The third son George was born in June 1755 and passed away January 7, 1845. His will is not filed in Fredericksburg. I¡¦m hoping it might be filed in Westminster (County seat of Carroll County). I know of one son ¡V George. If a will can be found it might provide missing information. George is also buried in Tom¡¦s Creek Church Cemetery.

Reasons for thinking Benjamin is related to this family

Benjamin moved away from Maryland to Shenandoah Co. in Virginia. The first record I have of Benjamin is his marriage to Sarah Rinehart (in Shenandoah county. Sarah is the daughter of Adam and Mary Price Rinehart) on March 4, 1830. Benjamin does not show up in the 1830 census. He buys land in 1836 for a grist mill near Luray (I actually think it was in Newport but I don¡¦t have hard proof yet), sells it in 1843, and moves to Barbour County WVA. The link back to the Row¡¦s in Maryland is to Michael Row listed above and his daughter Lucy Ann. Lucy Ann Row was born on April 30 1787. She married Michael Sluss - the son of Andrew and Catherine Sluss. In the 1800 Frederick Co. census (Emmitsburg election district 4 ¡V page 166) Andrew Sluss, Michael Row, Arthur Row, and George Row are all living next door to each other. George Row Sr. is the Executor of Andrew Sluss¡¦ will.

Michael Sluss and his wife Lucy Ann Row have a son named Andrew Sluss who was born in 1809. I believe he and Benjamin Row evidently became lifetime friends. They were probably next door neighbors. The records from Shenandoah Co. in Virginia show that this Andrew Sluss married Sarah Frances Carter there on April 13, 1841. In addition to that the 1850 census of Barbour Co. in West Virginia indicates that Benjamin Row and Andrew Sluss are close neighbors. Both say they were born in Maryland. Andrew passes away in the 1860¡¦s. Benjamin¡¦s wife Sarah passes away in 1865. Benjamin then marries Andrew¡¦s widow. This to me is a strong indication that Benjamin Row and Andrew Sluss were close friends. Both were born in Maryland, both moved to Shenandoah and were married, both moved to West Virginia and were neighbors. From all of this I have to believe Benjamin came from that particular family of Rows in Maryland.

Possible things to research

1.       I have not found any birth records for Benjamin Row. I have asked the people in Maryland to search their records ¡V particularly those for the Elias Lutheran Church in Emmitsburg.
2.       The wills in Frederick county for Michael Row and Arthur Row do not list a son named Benjamin. Maybe George Row¡¦s will is filed in Carroll county since George shows up in Carroll county census records. Perhaps a son Benjamin is listed.
3.       The sons of Michael, Arthur, or George Row could have been Benjamin¡¦s father. Many of these sons were born in the 1770 to 1790 time frame which would certainly make them the right age to be raising families in 1808 when Benjamin was born. I have not seen any of their wills.
4.       The names George, David, Henry, Jacob or William seem to be associated with the likely Row families from Virginia. Family lore says the Rows that Benjamin came from moved out of Maryland into Shenandoah Virginia and then down into Bath county Virginia.
ƒ{        The 1820 census in Shenandoah shows a George Row (26 to 45) with two sons 10 years or less. These sons could be Benjamin and a possible brother Jonathan. There is a Jonathan Row who shows up in Shenandoah census data from 1840 to 1870 who is one year younger than Benjamin and who was also born in Maryland. Benjamin names his son Andrew Jackson. Jonathan has David and William.
ƒ{       This George Row is the only Row indexed in 1820 in Shenandoah. There are no Rowe¡¦s indexed. Marriage records indicated there should also be a Henry Row and a David Row in the area but they are not indexed in the census.
ƒ{       There is a George Row in the 1830 census for Bath county in Virginia. This George is 40 to 50 years old and has kids of ages at least similar to the George Row in 1820 Shenandoah. There are no other Row¡¦s or Rowe¡¦s indexed in Bath county in 1830.
ƒ{       This family is probably the best candidate for where Benjamin came from. Incidentally all the original Maryland Row¡¦s (Michael, Arthur and George) had sons named George. I¡¦ve never been able to find information that says the George in Shenandoah and Bath counties is one of those sons.
5.       Property records or tax records might indicate son¡¦s names and who stayed in Maryland and who did not.
