Lynda:

Help me please!

I have traced my Roden/Rawdon/Roaden roots back to Wayne and Hardin Counties in Tennessee in 1850 and 1860, but cannot make a connection with Levi Rawdon or Greenberry Rawdon, who I know were in that area. My gggrandfather was Josiah Roden (b. 1825-1830).

The 1850 Hardin County TN census shows:
Roden Josiah......20...M...Laborer.........TN
Roden Eliza J.....23....F.......................TN

The 1860 Wayne County TN census shows:
Roden Josiah.......29...M...Day laborer...TN
Roden Elizabeth....30...F....................TN
Roden Margaritt.....7...F....................TN
Roden Sarah.........3...F....................TN
Roden Amos........3/12..M....................TN

The very next household shows more Rodens in Wayne County:
Roden S.D........56...M...Farmer.........SC
Roden Sarah......50...F......................NC
Roden Mary Ann...19...F....................MS
Roden Hickman....17...M...Farm laborer...TN
Roden Reuben H...14...M..................TN

In 1865 or 1866 Josiah Roden moved his family west across the Mississippi River to Dunklin County, Missouri (the "Bootheel" area). Hickman Roden, from the adjacent household also moved to Dunklin County, Missouri. (He was probably Josiah's brother). This branch of the Roden's is still in Dunklin County.

Can you identify any link between my Misssouri Rodens and your Rawdon family? In the adjacent household, do you have any idea who "S.D. Roden" might be? Could he perhaps be Josiah's father? Thanks for any help!

Thomas Roden
Memphis, TN
