Thank you for responding, and especially for including the notes on name pronunciation. I had really wondered about that. I have known at least one family that pronounced their name Ro, as in the rowing of a boat, or Roe vs. Wade. I was aware that other pronunciations were not only possible, but had been in more common use than the version I had known. I had also wondered about the pronunciation of Rowsburg, the most likely seeming to me to be equivalent to rose-berg, or rauz-berg. But now I still am not sure: Is the town pronounced with the sound of a z or an s? Or are both variants used correctly?

My ancestor was David Cooper, my g-g-grandfather, who died in 1902, not very long after dictating the manuscript to a typist. So, while the events being remembered and described occurred at times a half century earlier, the speaker was affected by both memory inconsistencies and the influence of the times in which the dictation took place. And David dictated from his notes as well as from memory. We don't know how well or how poorly the notes were taken in the first place. Then, too, the typist appears to have been rather challenged to get it all down, and there are some obvious phonetically derived spelling errors. So, I don't know how much can be deduced from the spelling of your name used in the manuscript, which was Rowe.

I have not yet identified which publisher will produce the book. This is some fairly highly sought after material, being a gold rush diary, and one that includes the Parker French debacle of a wagon train. And it is rather detailed, and extends beyond 38,000 words, so it is really going to be well received by historians. I will have very little trouble securing a publisher, and a well-respected one, at that. But that is one of the last steps. You don't bother the publisher of choice until you have the darned thing READY. There is still some research that is ongoing, plus all the material I can get from genealogical inquiries. And then the publisher, once I have a contract, is going to take another year and a half to two full years getting it into print. But should we both live that long, I have made a note of your interest, and will contact you.

Thanks again,
Dan
