I am an antique dealer and collector that specializes in paper items. I recently purchased an original muster roll for Captain William F. Hobart's Company "H" of US Regiment of Light Artillery for the period of March and April, 1819. It contains 65 names of officers, musicians, artificers and Matross's. By the dictionary, a matross is a gunner or a gunner's mate; one of the soldiers in a train of artillery, who assisted the gunners in loading, firing, and sponging the guns. One of the people listed as a drummer is Michael Rowe. All of the soldiers on the muster roll are listed below along with their rank: William F. Hobart - Captain Samuel M. McKay - 1st Lieutenant John C. Russell - 2nd Lieutenant John J. Taylor - Sergeant James Fitzgerald - Sergeant Isaac Cross - Sergeant Joseph B. Lamb - Sergeant Thomas McClennon - Corporal John Haskill - Corporal Joseph Smith - Corporal William Hale - Corporal Michael Rowe - Drummer Elijah Polalrd - Fifer Pierson Comley - Artificer Jonathan Slack - artificer Elias Snyder - Artificer James Gallagher - Artificer James Thompson - Artificer John Miller - artificer Matross: Lewis L. Allen Patrick Burns Joel W. Bartlett Benjamin Casley Thomas Cox Thomas Canada Thomas B. Collison Nathaniel Covell Peter Chapman James Coyles John Dunn Coleman Duncan Benjamin Evans Evan Evanoff Jeremiah Freeman John Furman Ebenezer Fowler John Griffon James Gibson Jeremiah Garner Joseph Gilmer Caleb Havens James Hughes Morris Jackson William Jackson Peter Lemerere Baptiste Leloquel David Leeds George Lesley George McCollister Robert Manning Daniel Morrison John Nimlock William Nicholson John O'Neal William Patterson Luke Rich Robert Smith Stephen Sandusky Isaack Stevens Trueman Tuttle Caeb Tuyeret Harvey Tileston William Vancourt Joseph Wyant Daniel Whitney The roll is signed by Captain Hobart on the back and Abraham Eustis, Lieutenant Colonel. It was signed "at Fort Warren in the Harbour of Boston". I am interested in corresponding with family members who would have an interest in this item. I can offer pictures of it to anyone who has an interest. Thanks, Joy Shivar JustaJoy Historical Treasures www.JustaJoy.com Notify Administrator about this message?
