Hi Gordon:
This is what I found, starting with the Social Security Death Index for more exact dates:
Oliver E. Rowland 4 June 1904 - 13 Aug 1989
Ethel Rowland 16 Dec 1910 - Aug 1978
Then I went to the 1910 US Census since Oliver E. Rowland was b. 1904.
1910 Beaver, Pike County, Ohio
ROWLAMD (all b. Ohio, with mother and father b. Ohio)
William, age 30
Minnie, age 30, Wife
Oliver E., age 6, Son
Ralph R., age 4, Son
Roscoe, age 2, Son
Frank Smith, age 13, Step-son
Anna Smith, age 11, Step-son
John Smith, age 9, Step-son
Coming forward, I find: 1920 Lancaster Ward 2, Fairfield County, OH
A Amelia Rowland, age 40
E Frank Smith, age 22
John Smith, age 18
Oliver Rowland, age 15
E Ralph Rowland, age 13
Joseph Rowland, age 10
In 1930 I could not find an "exact" match, that is to Oliver's age and wife's name. This is the closest match, which is in Marion, Marion County, Ohio:
Oliver E. Rowland, age 24 (age is blotted on the Census page and could be 24 or 26 or ?)
Lillian C. Rowland, age 23
Wilber E. Rowland, age 4
There is a newspaper reference "Billy Rowland of Lancaster is spending a week with his grandmother, Mrs. R. Sessler." dated July 22, 1931, in the Marion Star.
The Marion Star, 7 April 1928, "Oliver Rowland and family moved to Marion this week."
The Marion Star, 3 Oct 1930, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Rowland and son Billy of Marion were Sunday guests of Mrs. Rosa Sissler.
The Marion Star, 19 April 1975, "Mrs. Oliver Rowland of 396 West Center St., reported a break-in and told police that someone had taken some antiques - an old push plow, wine press gears, a drill, tin snips, and horseshoe pliers, valued at a total of $135."
I'm wondering if either this wife passed away, or if Oliver was possibly married twice (?) -- see, Genealogy is the art of closing one door and opening another.
GOING BACK...
In 1900, I find William with mother and family in Beaver, Pike County, Ohio:
Lucy A. Rowland, age 53
Edward Rowland, age 26
William Rowland, age 20
Anna B. Rowland, age 18
(Note the transcriber interpreted Lucy's first name as "Luiz" but if one looks at the blotted writing on the Census, they can pick out "Lucy").
The 1890 Census destroyed, we're going back to 1880:
Jackson, Jackson County, Ohio:
Abraham Rowland, age 48, b. OH, father b. MD, mother b. PA
Lucy A., age 33
Paren (Parden?), age 17
George R., age 13
Emma J., age 11
Sanuel E., age 7
Luscinda A., age 5
William, age 5 months
I did not go back further, except to look on a "family tree" on Ancestry.com that noted Lucy A.'s maiden name as "Weatherspoon," and Abraham's parents as Samuel Rowland and Frances Tope. This is all verifiable by you, of course, but should give you some starting blocks.
I hope this gives you some leads!
Best regards:
Jack Sheldon, Jr., CPA
