I too am seeking proof that the Rowlands of Botetourt, Virginia are originally from Pennsylvania, and before that, Wales. The following information, and the names, Robert, Thomas, George, James and John seem to fit with the Rowlands in Botetourt too closely to be just coincidence.
Earliest Rowlands in America
There a mention of Thomas Rowland, his brother John Rowland, John's wife Priscilla Shephard Rowland as passengers, along with William Penn on the pilgrim ship "Welcome", landing in Philadelphia in 1682. The complete passenger list can be found through Chester County’s web page.
A George Rowland was born in Rhosybayvil, Bayvil Parish, Pembrokeshire, Wales, the son of Thomas Rowland, also of that parish.Thomas Rowland purchased 1,000 acres of land in the Welsh Tract of Chester County, Pennsylvania from William Penn on 3 March 1691. A little later another brother, John Rowland, also purchased land in the Welsh Tract,
Robert Rowland was in the Augusta County Militia in 1742 under George Robinson. Many of the other men in this militia are also in the early records of Lancaster and Chester Counties in Pennsylvania in the early 1700's. I feel that Robert may have been the son of a George Rowland who received a license to settle from Samuel Blunston in 1734 near the west side of the Susquehanna River.
Early Rowland references in Quaker Genealogy:John Rowland married in Chester County and had a large family. The death of John Rowland in 1728 in Chester County, a friend, but not a Quaker.A mention of the 1729 marriage of Rachel Rowland, daughter of Thomas Rowland of Chester County in the records of Irish Quaker immigrants.
